I often wonder if teachers truly know how much of a difference they make. I can recall a few, who still to this day, have a special place in my heart. So this month we honour these guardians of our children minds. This month in particular, we thank Mr Davy, who took time out of his day to tell a local mum how well her child was doing. A lovely deed in itself but that act had even more of an effect than he knew. Being a mother brings not only copious amounts of guilt that we're not doing it "right" but also we want our children to be liked, to be happy and to succeed (whatever that means) and when someone can assure us that they're doing okay it's a huge relief and a much needed pat on the back. Teachers are entrusted with so much but it's not only the children who benefit from a considerate educator. Knowing that they will play such an enormous role in our children's lives means of course that they play an enormous role in our lives as well. A good teacher can and does change lives.
Today as I thanked Mr Davy, and handed him a box full of delicious deli counter goodies you could see he was unsure what he had done to deserve this. In fact so far it's the same expression for each months nomination. It's this surprise and ultimate huge smile which makes doing this SO worthwhile, because just when you think that surely they get thanked all the time, you realise that it's not nearly enough.
And that is why we're doing this. Its making sure that people know they are seen. That what they do and say is heard and felt and appreciated. I think that's what we all strive for.
